#RPGaDay 12: Old RPG Still Played

#rpgaday Day #12: Old RPG you still play.

I currently play D&D and Fate. I’ve talked enough about D&D, but I am excited about Fate.

Fate started out in 1992 as FUDGE, a usenet-crowdsourced game system using a simple dice mechanic that really hasn’t changed much in the intervening years. The original game is still available online for free.

In the mid-1990’s, I want to say maybe 1996 or so, I played a FUDGE hack of Bunnies and Burrows, which is a Watership Down setting for GURPS. Inspired, I returned the following year to run a FUDGE game in which the PCs were all the rat companions of an evil society of wererats. The skill pyramid and how challenges worked back then is very similar to how Fate works today, and I might resurrect my notes some time to share them.

Fate isn’t the only old RPG I play, of course, but it has one of the oldest histories for a game that is a “new school RPG.”
