May 2005: Book Reviews

This is an archive of my shorter book reviews and notes, which historically have been posted over at the 50 Book Challenge on LiveJournal, but which I’m starting to move over here. I’m posting them with altered date-stamps, but they might show up in my LiveJournal cross-post anyway. Bear with me, please.

Note: Many of these books also have full reviews available in the book review podcast (RSS).

#16:

Loved it, of course. There’s a deep pathos in this work, much more than in anything else King writes.

#17:

A fun YA novel about becoming a wizard in 20th century New York. The setup is a little hard to swallow (I personally don’t appreciate pre-teen all-powerful wizards), but for a fun flippy read, or if I were 20 years younger, it’s enjoyable.

#18:

A quirky political comedy about a young woman who is practically the dictionary definition of “neurotic,” and self-aware enough to know it yet still be trapped by it.

Still pulling through One Hundred Years of Solitude and also listening to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, which is turning out to be a really wonderful read!
