That out of the way, it’s hard for me to pin down my favorite game mechanic. Probably something like fan mail– any time players are rewarded for supporting each other, I get a thrill. A good example of this is in Istanbul– you can take actions in which you give someone else a small benefit (in Istanbul, you pay them), and as a result, you also get something you wanted. Steam Works also does this, although I will admit that the one game I played was less than stellar due to poor teaching and rules comprehension. But that one mechanic, where you get something when someone else does something– that’s a little thing I groove with in a game.
Note that this is usually used in competitive games, especially board games, where the choice to help an adversary is a very compelling decision point for a player.
