My birthday gift arrived yesterday! It’s a bass ukulele!

The bass ukulele is 30″ long and has thick, rubberized strings. It has the same tuning as a bass guitar. They are usually built on a baritone uke body, with amp pickups (this one has the pickups).

Unamplified, they sound a little plunky, but not too bad. Amplified, it sounds quite good, and the volume dial on the body lets me crank it down to acceptable “background” volumes for playing with an un-amped acoustic ukulele.

Tobias Strauss and I played together last night, and it was really fun! I’m looking forward to being able to take this new addition with me when I travel next month and in October for Big Bad Con!

  1. so weird!  I can play GCEA badly but enthusiastically, and have made pleasing non-musical noise on a DGBE baritone once.

I didn’t know this kind of stringing was even a thing.  I am now looking at Youtube to see it in action.
