My birthday gift arrived yesterday! It’s a bass ukulele!
The bass ukulele is 30″ long and has thick, rubberized strings. It has the same tuning as a bass guitar. They are usually built on a baritone uke body, with amp pickups (this one has the pickups).
Unamplified, they sound a little plunky, but not too bad. Amplified, it sounds quite good, and the volume dial on the body lets me crank it down to acceptable “background” volumes for playing with an un-amped acoustic ukulele.
Tobias Strauss and I played together last night, and it was really fun! I’m looking forward to being able to take this new addition with me when I travel next month and in October for Big Bad Con!

That might be one or the coolest things I’ve ever seen!
How is it strung? Conventional uke layout?
No, it’s strung/tuned like a bass guitar! E-A-D-G, so all my bass practice transfers over pretty well!
awesome
so weird! I can play GCEA badly but enthusiastically, and have made pleasing non-musical noise on a DGBE baritone once.
I didn’t know this kind of stringing was even a thing. I am now looking at Youtube to see it in action.Â
Sweet.
Look at you, so cute!!!!
Thank you, Mickey Schulz!
I will have my guitar at BBC and my songbook with chord charts. Just sayin. 🙂
We need Sean Nittner to put “music jam” on the schedule somewhere….
Saturday night ice cream social and music show!
Stephanie Bryant … It had already been done for us: http://www.bigbadcon.com/events/justice-dance/
Sean Nittner but that’s dancing, not playing! I plan to dance at Sea Dracula! (I’m so excited about that one!)
