RIP: Clapotis

I had insomnia last night and, as I usually do when I have insomnia, I thought about knitting.

I’m actually surprised at how seldom I dream about knitting, considering how much I think about it.

Anyway, I’ve been knitting a scarf/shawl thing for my mom, but it hasn’t been going well. I’m using laceweight yarn for a sock-weight project. The pattern is the extremely popular Clapotis scarf from Knitty, and it’s a fun knit, but….

But I haven’t worked on it in forever, and it’s been sitting here, in timeout in my bag, and I’m not impressed right now by it.

So, I made the decision in the wee hours that I should frog it and knit something else with the yarn. It’s the wrong yarn for this project, and I just have to accept that.

One of my “knitting rules” (which I break often) is that, the first time you think “this isn’t working, I should frog this,” you should stop and put the piece down for 24 hours. Then, pick it up and frog it. Don’t keep knitting on it. A project that isn’t working now, won’t be working 10,000 stitches from now. “If I keep knitting, it will get better” is not true. It is the biggest knitting lie and is responsible for any number of knitting atrocities, like sweaters that can double as life preservers, and socks that belonged hung by the chimney with care.
