Knitted Heat Wave!

I realized yesterday that I own more pairs of socks than any other type of garment, including underwear. One half of my delicates drawer is dedicated to socks– half that space is handknit socks, the other half are commercially-made socks. This is, of course, just 2 weeks after I’ve gone through my clothes and tossed/donated anything I don’t want or is ratty.

So, naturally on Friday I cast on:

As of today, and thanks to watching True Blood last night, it is now this:

I frogged the blue sock I was working on for my dad. Why? Because I had used more than half the yarn before I finished the first sock. Since I do not have more of this yarn in this dye lot, I will need to get more yarn (darn!) for his pair of socks.

Last weekend, I knit a bunny, which I lightly felted in the washing machine:

I felted it on purpose, which is the first time I’ve purposely felted something, I should point out!

This week, I also knit what was going to be a cat bed. I felted it– my second (deliberately) felted thing! Here it is drying, using our salad spinner as a form:

The cat bed felted down too much, and is too small for Alladin’s big booty. So, instead I replaced the little cardboard box we’ve been using for the past year for his toy box:

This is great, because the previous box is really too small for all of Alladin’s toys, and he tends to pull out only the ones from the top. With a wider top and generally bigger bowl, he can now reach the littler toys, the ones that tend to settle on the bottom (like mousies and such).

I cast on and knitted another Wisp scarf this week:

Isn’t it pretty? It’s made of Artyarns Silk Mohair, and I got the yarn on sale last weekend. It’s very pretty and soft and I don’t know if I’ll keep it or not. I do need to block it, though– the yarn is a little filmy and does something weird at the edges. Unlike my last Wisp scarf, this one is the length described in the pattern (though not the width– I shaved off about 4 stitches, worried about running out of yarn…. I needn’t have worried).

And today I knitted a second brown bunny, to be felted and photographed. And sewed up a practice swatch that I think is now a cat toy.

All that knitting, and we still managed to see a bunch of friends this week, get my taxes done, and get ready for Sock Summit next week!

Portland’s heat wave: another excuse to stay indoors with air conditioning and yarn.
