The Errant Hat

I made this hat:

TY Hat 3

about 2 1/2 weeks ago. It’s #3 in a set of 3 hats, all the same pattern but in different yarn combinations, all knit as thank you presents for the guys down at the office.

I washed and blocked it and took a picture of it, and then… I lost it. I meant to put it with the other 2 hats, but somehow, the three hats never made it to the same place at the same time.

I have torn up the RV looking for this hat (and a stray ball of yarn that I despair of ever finding again), with no luck or success. I have looked inside the basement, but there was no joy there. I have walked around the RV saying “Where on Earth could it possibly go? There isn’t anywhere to hide!” I have gone back and forth and back again….

Yesterday, I got a phone call from my nephew. “Thanks for the sweater and the hat, Aunt Stephie!”

About 2 weeks ago, I put a bunch of comics into a box with this sweater:

which I had also knitted. It took me about 6 months to finish due to not having enough yarn, and I think I may have screwed up the gauge. But hey, it’s a Fibonacci sweater, and it’s warm and washable, so it can’t be all terrible for a 10 year old boy.

But… hat?

My sister gets on the phone. “He really loves the hat.”

Me: “Hat? What hat?”

Her: “The blue and black hat– it was in the box!”

Me: (pause) “Was there a ball of blue yarn in there, by any chance?”

We had a chuckle, and she promised not to tell him the hat was originally knit for someone else. Hell if I’m going to revoke the cool hat that he loves. I have enough yarn left over from that batch of hats– I will make another thank you hat for the office.
