August 2007: Book Reviews

This is an archive of my shorter book reviews and notes, which historically have been posted over at the 50 Book Challenge on LiveJournal, but which I’m starting to move over here. I’m posting them with altered date-stamps, but they might show up in my LiveJournal cross-post anyway. Bear with me, please.

Note: Many of these books also have full reviews available in the book review podcast (RSS).

I wrote a review of this on my blog.

A good example of why Barry should stick to columns– he can’t maintain a punch line through a whole book.

#58:

Next in the series, and a cute, enjoyable read. A thrift store find, which makes it even better.

A fun, funny look at hiking the Appalachian Trail. Thoughtful and enjoyable. As I was reading it, I would pause and read excerpts out loud to my husband, who is a hiker, but not a reader. I will definitely check out his other books in the future.

Girl porn. Pure and simple. No skimping on the steamy sex scenes. A fun read. There’s even a plot which develops in the last 150 pages of the book, to keep the reader engaged during the emotional development phase of the book. I liked it. Another author I’ll keep up with.

Based on some 50bookchallengers’ recommendations, I decided to give Sookie Stackhouse a second try, this time in audiobook format. Still not my thing. I enjoyed the reader, but not the book. I just can’t get over the whole “Sookie Stackhouse, who was a virgin until she met vampire Bill, is desired by every man she meets.” It just doesn’t ring true to me– apparently, she cannot have a relationship with a male that isn’t sexually charged, unless he’s a gay fairy, in which case she desires him. I think I will give up on Sookie for now.
