June 2007: Book Reviews

This is an archive of my shorter book reviews and notes, which historically have been posted over at the 50 Book Challenge on LiveJournal, but which I’m starting to move over here. I’m posting them with altered date-stamps, but they might show up in my LiveJournal cross-post anyway. Bear with me, please.

Note: Many of these books also have full reviews available in the book review podcast (RSS).

#42:

Twist of Honor, by Karin Welss

A cute romance novel, read in an ARC (advanced review copy). My review of it is here.

#43:

Pope Joan: Translated and Adapted from the Greek of Emmanual (Peter Owen Modern Classic), by Lawrence Durrell

A historical semi-novel about Pope Joan, a medieval pope who was a disguised woman. Not very long, but it read like one of those 19th century “trying too hard to be satirical” novels.

#44:

Staying Dead (Retrievers, Book 1), by Laura Anne Gilman

A paranormal mystery/suspense novel. The main character reminded me too much of a cross between Stephanie Plum and Max from Dark Angel.

#45:

Four to Score (Stephanie Plum Novels), by Janet Evanovich

After Staying Dead, I was thirsty for the real thing, so I dug into Four to Score for an afternoon. Evanovich, as usual, does not disappoint. I do adore Ms. Plum!

#46:

Scientific Papers and Presentations, Second Edition, by Martha Davis

A book about how to write and format papers for the scientific and medical industries. Not boring, but not super-exciting, either. Just…Solid.

#47:

Definitely Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 6), by Charlaine Harris

A Sookie Stackhouse supernatural novel. In this one, Sookie hooks up with a were-tiger and has her heart broken, gets bit a few times, and narrowly escapes extreme danger. This is the first Sookie Stackhouse novel I’ve read. I think I’m learning that I just don’t get into these supernatural heroine novels as much as I used to.
