I really don’t get BitTorrent

I’m attempting to get something via torrent right now and it says it has “14 days remaining” to download.

I really, really, don’t understand the draw.

Since it’s a peer-to-peer system, your download speed is limited by the number of peers and the upload speeds they offer.

The draw, for downloading music, video, et al, is that there’s usually a lot of peers for new or popular stuff, so you can download quickly. Episodes of Doctor Who, for example, usually had several hundred peers within a few hours of the torrent being published, and the downloads could easily saturate my ADSL connection.

Most legitimate torrent downloads don’t tend to attract such attention, so the speed isn’t as good.

Sometimes it’s like that, sometimes you get 100K/sec. Depends on the popularity of the file and if there are well-connected seeds.

Sometimes it starts like that and then radically speeds up once you have a few chunks of the file and can start trading rather than begging.

Basically the mere existence of a torrent means nothing, but a good torrent can be very useful indeed.

I’ve learned that you just can’t be in a hurry with Bittorrent. Also it helps to download things that have good health (usually indicated by a green bar on the site where you find them).

That being said, a lot of times these downloads speed up. It probably won’t be that long.
