Reject: Sprawl
13-Oct-06
“The Sprawl” was rejected by Snowy Egret, which I seem to have had bad information on (or, apparently, did not read the whole entry for), as the letterhead calls it “The Oldest Independent U.S. Journal of Nature Writing,” and the description in the 2007 Novel & Short Story Writer’s Market claims it’s looking for works that celebrate the beauty of nature. Given that “The Sprawl” is a short story from the point of view of a woman whose son was executed by the state for raping and murdering women, I’m pretty sure the glory of nature isn’t what I was going for.
Note to self: it will be easier to make a sale if you actually submit to the right markets.
