Local wildlife
03-Jul-06
I wish I’d had a camera this morning, though of course I only caught a fleeting glimpse anyway.
Local wildlife in our area:
A large family of quail.
A family of deer (1 doe, 1 buck, 1 older fawn).
A ruckus of squirrels.
Several jays of various types and song.
Vagrant mallard ducks
Crawdads in the creek
Bats
More than enough bugs to feed the bats
Something that starts “chirping” (more like screeching) about an hour before dawn. Every. Damn. Day.
A wealth of gophers.
And as of today: a red-tailed hawk, which I caught a glimpse of movement in the thick vegetation next to the house, kept looking hoping to see what it was, then was blessed with a vision of a small hawk, quite ruddy and mottled, leaping from the vegetation, prize in talon.
