How is the con?
The con is fine. A lot of fun. I got to interview some amazing people today. It’s been awesome.
I also got some review copies of books and movies, which also rocked. I’m enjoying myself. I’m enjoying my role here, doing the interviews and talking to people about cool things.
I participated/vlogged in a poetry thing this morning, did interviews all day, played in a Zendo tournament which, from what I could tell, was not scheduled for the amount of time it would take (first round took us over an hour, in a 2-hour slot, and we started late). I played a couple of pick-up games of Fluxx, which was also awesome. I wandered all over the place, but did not end up dancing, having arrived in the dancing area in between the costume contest and the dancing.
It’s midnight, and I’m a little tired. I was up at 6 AM this morning, and will likely be up around that time tomorrow. Hopefully not, though.
There are many parts of fandom that I Just Don’t Understand. I understand costuming. I understand a six year old wanting to marry Spiderman. I understand a ten year old naming their stuffed dragon. I do not really understand a thirty year old naming their stuffed dragons and then talking to the creator/seller at the Dealer’s Room, calling the dragons by name, and having to explain which one they mean, as if the dealer will remember.
In a way, I understand it in the sense that I know I do it, too. But in another way, it seems… odd to me. Like when you meet someone who’s responses to your cues is just a little bit off from what you expect, either because they don’t make eye contact, or they are not as fast at responding to you as you’re used to, rhythm-wise, or whatever.

I freakout at cons. Too many people who have taken fannish obcession a little to far, way past mine and sometimes my own fanatic behavior scares me.

A con is for fannish obsession (except of the naming of the dragons thing. That’s weird). That’s part of the reason there are cons - so folks can gather and be amongst their own without getting fired or told they such because they’re different, etc. etc. Of course, most of them go home and lead normal lives and do normal things and the fannish stuff doesn’t take up nearly the amount of headspace, time and obsession that it seems to at a con.
I’ll tell you, though, I am disturbed by the loners who carry around their pet rabbits in baby strollers. Yes, that does disturb me.

I love seeing the cosplaying and “fashion parades”. I personally love to dress up for things myself. Its more peoples behaviour when at cons that really start to freak me out. Its like there are special rules for them, the rest of the world does not exist. That worries me. I think it was the same thing that use to get to me when I did re-enactment. That little percentage that went a little too far, freaks me out.
Then again I do have a thing about people dressed up. You should see me at a theme park, I have to keep changing direction so I dont confront someone playing a charater.
Ive been told I have a high level of fannish tendencies. Yet I dont go all gushy* at possibility of meeting someone, even someones work I admire highly, I still see them as people.
(* okay I got all shy, when I could have meet Margaret Wertheim. I had a serious crush on her. Thats been the only time.)
