This is in reference to a travel bug that I sent out in May, 2003, to travel across the country to eventually wind up in Missouri, in my nephew Austin’s hands, having collected kid-appropriate jokes on the way. It’s been through 34 people’s hands, travelled 6,385 miles, and it’s gone from California to Michigan to Atlanta, Georgia and many spots in between!
Every time it moved, my mother just about went ballistic, hoping it would come closer. It was cute.
Last month, mom’s husband took their GPSr with him when he went on a long business trip to California. He needed it to navigate the roads. I haven’t been geocaching in a while, so I mailed my GPSr to her to use when the book got close. A few weeks ago, I emailed the last person to visit the nearby cache that it was in, and she said the bug was still there, but it was now in her possession. Yesterday, she dropped it in a cache very close to my mom’s house, and they’re going to pick it up this weekend.
I’m so excited and happy, and I think I’ll do this again with something cute for Elizabeth. Perhaps a sticker book, collecting stickers on the way, except those don’t hold up as well in the variable-climate adventures of a travel bug…
The joke book is finally here. Jennifer, Lizzy, Austin
and I will go get it from the micro cache on
Interstate 35 way stop. I think Oren and I were there
two years ago. We will take our pictures- all of us in
T shirts from geocaching.com! The book has traveled
over 6,300 miles. To view the information about this
book, go to www.geocaching.com and click on travel bus
“Austin’s Joke Book”. This is really VERY EXCITING!
Jennifer and the kids were going to spend Friday night
here anyway. We are having a seasonal lunch on
Saturday at 1 pm - I am providing sloppy joes. Others
are bringing potato salad, cake and chips. All will
be there. Should be fun - and at that time we will
look at the US map and see the joke book’s travels!
Love to all,
Bonnie, Mommy, Lovey, Mimi or whatever you know me as
