There is a special election on November 8th here in CA.
In my ever-escalating role as a poll-worker, I will be a precinct supervisor for a double precinct. This means there will be twice as many staff, two lines for polling, two rosters…. you get the idea. Unlike any other job, however, I actually get paid twice the amount for doing twice the work.
I’m working over by UCSC, where there are many students and professors.
They are short by one pollworker in my precincts.
If anyone local (Santa Cruz County, CA) is willing and able to work all day on November 8th, I would ADORE TO HAVE YOUR HELP!!! The pay is pretty low given the long day– $60, as I recall for clerks– but there is a certain amount of self-satisfaction in knowing you have really and truly “given back” to your community in a tangible way. Also, I will bring chocolate goodies to munch on throughout the day. It’s a small bribe, and by the time we close the polls at 8, it won’t seem like much. But, y’know, every little bit helps.
Also, and I’m not saying that this is anything more than coincidence: I’ve worked as a clerk or supervisor for a few years now. I have never been called for jury duty. I’m sure it’s a coincidence, but still. Karma, baby. Karma.
Oh, and if you’re not local but think you could still do it, why not call your local elections board and see if they need help?
It must be Monday.
I have two cavities.
I am wearing pantyhose in anticipation of my appointment this afternoon. And a girdle. Ugh.
Someone called my extension on Friday afternoon to ask me to come talk to him “Monday morning.” (I got in at 1).
And Starbucks was out of my favorite sandwich, so I had to get third-best and hope I don’t spill.
I dreamed last night that I was late to my Halloween party, and had to rush to get a costume together, so I went as Hermione, in my graduation regalia and a knitted Gryffindor scarf and kinked up my hair.
It’s not a bad idea, actually.
I have a dentist appointment this morning, so am taking a half day. I should have just about enough time to come home and get some stuff together and change for work before heading over the hill before noon.
NaNoWriMo is up and ready to go. I want to start posting my world-building exercises today. Should be ok– I started a day late last year with no problem.
I want to take the whole day off, but I can’t.
Tomorrow is the Suckaversary. I’m “celebrating” this year by going to work, then hanging out with my friend Inga before Piano class. Perhaps I will also celebrate by quitting my job, if everything goes well this afternoon.
I installed Virtual PC on my laptop and Framemaker and have decided this is probably not going to work very well. I need a second computer. Fuck.
