My own Meme!

When you see this meme on your friends page, ignore everything related to Serenity and Firefly because, geeze, can we say manipulative viral marketing, anyone?

The thing is, most of the people participating want to spread the viral marketing since they think that the film deserves a sequel.

(Personally, I don’t, even though I just bought tickets for myself and on the opening day here.)

HAHAHA Yes I’ve seen a bit about it. Though I didn’t really watch the show I did see the episode with the girl they were chasing. I don’t know if that is what this movie is all about. *shrug* I think it is as MikeCDN was talking to me about it. He’s been anxiously awaiting this movie release. I’m more interested in finding out when Mary & Jerry’s film will finally air. It’s been in the works for alot of years and if they screw around with it a long time before relase it may end up not being like the story they told and some things altered to media hype. :P

Having been subjected to Serenity viral marketing for about a year now, I’m getting really sick of it.

I’ve never watched the show, either. That’s probably why.

I’d probably be interested more if they had Farescape done as a movie. They were supposed to bring it back for a few episodes so they could finish it properly as it’s fan base went wacky over it’s end. I’d also not mind seeing a second stargate movie. It is different than the series but I still liked the movie. I think though I like Atlantis more than SG1.

Hollywood though seems to go in cycles. They do their spy thing then their sci fi. Probably in a year it will be “heartfelt drama hype” time.

I’m so tired of seeing that stuff on my Friends page. :(

Yeah, if you haven’t seen the show it probably is annoying. It’s like any other meme, if you like it then it’s great, and if you don’t then you wish everyone else would sit down and shut up.

I’ve been a fan of the show since it was first broadcast and was one of the lonely few trying to follow it through its schedule changes. I missed it when it was canceled and I bought the DVD set the minute it was available. I’m happy about the movie and would probably be posting about it whether or not the meme had come up. I haven’t been posting about it for a year though. So yes, it’s viral marketing, but I don’t feel particularly manipulated.

I wouldn’t worry, about a week after the release the hubbub should die down.

They did bring back Farscape - look for ‘Peacekeeper Wars’. A two-part mini-series.

  8. celticess wrote:

Has it already aired? I’m wondering if I missed it. One show I definitly miss was Crusade. That one died before it’s time. B5 sure it had been on for quite awhile though I didn’t watch it religiously or anything. Which reminds me I wonder if a new season of Dr who is out. It used to be on at 8 on tuesdays(CBC). I either keep missing it or they changed it’s time.(I forget if the cbc strike is over)

  9. wibbble wrote:

It aired ages ago - some time last year, I believe.

Crusade was great - it’s a pity that there wasn’t the fan action for that that there was for FireFly.

The new Doctor Who is all finished now, at least here. :op I’m waiting for the Christmas Special.

    Whedon fandom frightens me.

  11. celticess wrote:

Well I thought it was an ongoing series. Right before summer it ended with a new doctor coming in. So as it’s new show season here I was hoping it was going to start up again. The new ones here now is Regenisis. However oddly last years Grey’s Anatomy isn’t selling on DVD yet. There was some other show I couldn’t find on amazon.ca either. *shrug* Might of been the new Who actually.

  12. wibbble wrote:

That was the end of the current series of Doctor Who. It was only, IIRC, 13 episodes, which is perfectly normal for a British TV series. There’s going to be a Christmas Special (at Christmas, of course), and the next series will bee next year. They’ve already started filming.

‘Peacekeeper Wars’ is out on DVD (and so is the new Doctor Who, for that matter).

I’m beginning to think that any time I find a show interesting it will be canceled before it has a chance. I really liked Crusade too, and was quite frustrated when they took it off the air.

I’m down to about 2 TV shows that I follow. I suppose it’s all for the best, it’s time I can use for other things.

  16. halfawake wrote:

Yes, I’ve seen people raving about that. I had never heard of the series so I just thought it was ironic that the title of the movie was called Serenity and it was about some war. Fortunately, only one of my LiveJournal friends posted about it and him only once, so it hasn’t been too terribly bad for me.

I think there is always a core at the heart of any sort of fandom, Firefly, BtVS, LoTR, HP, the GOP that are scary to the point you want to disconnect them from their computers and get them to taste fresh air. It isn’t exclusive to Whedon or his shows.

Oddly, I have yet to see this meme so am rather curious. I tried watching one show when it was first on Fox and thought the space ships and western thing was just a little too weird (someone explained it later and it made better sense, not good but better) and I didn’t follow the series. At the recommendation of friends I’ve watched the episodes and was pleasantly surprised. Looking forward to the movie, too.

Well… the “quote Firefly” meme is neck and neck with the “quote Shakespeare” one on my flist right now. I don’t see the harm, its fun, its people quoting stuff they like, same as towel day for Douglas Adams. Though it annoys me a tiny bit because I’ve not seen all the firefly episodes yet and Serenity isn’t due out in the UK for a couple of months so I’m dodging spoilers left right and centre!

I have been too embarrassed to say that I don’t even know what Serenity or Firefly are. How had I never heard of them before this week?

  20. chrisls wrote:

Are you saying something about “My Own Meme”, or makig statements about Serenity posts? I’m quite confused. Personally, having watched the whole Firefly series via Netflix, I am REALLY hoping this movie will respark the series on the SciFi channel or something. For me personally, it was one of the best TV derived movies I’ve seen - expanding the universe, advancing characters, answering questions, and leaving me wanting more. I want Firefly back, and I’m certainly no paid hack of whoever it is who made the movie or TV series.

Because I am sure I am not the only European that has no idea whatsoever about what they’re supposed to be besides - well marketed.

As with any hype, I can’t say I feel all that terrible about it, too.

Maybe I’ll find out, maybe not. In the meantime, I guess some of you are having enormous fun, which is probably not a bad thing after all :-P.

Don’t be annoyed, be amused, I say :-D!

  22. wibbble wrote:

OTOH, there’s plenty of Europeans who do know what it’s about: the world premiere of the film was at the Edinburgh Film Festival in August, and the vast majority of the people attending were not American. :o)

  23. saminz wrote:

Aha. Oops. Maybe I should have said “continental Europeans”, then :-)?

    Sorries ;-)!

  24. wibbble wrote:

Even then there’s plenty of fans everywhere…

In that respect it’s no different than every other American-based TV show or film.

  25. saminz wrote:

Aww - look, don’t take me so seriously ;-)!

There *might* also be a generation gap, here, and I don’t watch much tv.
As I said, I don’t begrudge anyone their fun with it, after all!

But I confess, of course. It’s probably just me that’s puzzled and amused :-D.
