Awwww… I actually have a dog question for you. I was watching NCIS and Gabby says something about her “coon dog.” Is that a breed of dog like the Main Coon cat? Or is it simply a dog trained to hunt/scare away raccoons?

Very cute trouble, but definitely Trouble.

    It’s both.

There are breeds known as “coon hounds” like the Black and Tan coonhounds, which are hounds that hunt by scent (hounds are generally hunters– bloodhounds and the like hunt by scent, sighthounds like greyhounds hunt primarily by sight). But a generic term “coon hound” or “coon dog” is any dog, often mutts descended from a scent-hunting hound, whose primary evolutionary purpose is hunting small game. This can include raccoons or other “varmint” game (vermin, such as raccoons, gophers, muskrat, rat, or even rabbit, though rabbit is usually hunted by sight because they move so darn fast). You could have a “coon dog” who had never gone hunting, I suppose, but why? Usually, your coon dog does not hunt birds with you– most bird dogs are retrievers– the human has to find the bird himself.

Oh, and I don’t know what NCIS, but if it’s some kind of crime show, the coon dog might be used like a bloodhound to hunt a suspected criminal or track a lost child. The scent hounds are used mostly for tracking and search & rescue nowadays.

Thanks for the explaination and no this is before Abby became a CSI/Lab tech.

    NCIS:

It’s a JAG spin off show that is sort of like CSI and Law and order CI.

Redbone coonhounds are actually my second most favouritist breed in the world, after Dobes. I’d never, ever have one unless I had a good amount of acreage, though, since their baying is insanely loud and carries.
