Fishers and shooters
27-Sep-05
For my friends (mostly NaNo’ers) who are doing the survival-training thing lately:
I’ve come to the conclusion that I have no business surviving an apocalypse, being a non-breeder who can’t stand to shoot a gun or eat fish (*snerk*). HOWEVER, I admire and support my friends who are preparing for the worst by building skills they may need someday in the future.
With that in mind, I offer my mad fiber skillz for teaching the basics of spinning some weekend.
Topics covered:
1. Fiber and how to prepare it for spinning (washing and carding), including how to work with “raw” fiber that isn’t professionally prepared.
2. How to make your own drop spindle or stick spindle.
3. How to spin yarn on a drop spindle (as well as on a wheel, though making your own wheel isn’t so easy).
4. How to ply yarn.
5. Other things you can do with fiber (dyeing, felting, etc.) and what *not* to worry about in spinning.
I know has the other clothing-related skillz covered, with knitting and sewing being top items to learn.
