1 week of prednisone
Here’s what I’ve learned about prednisone after 1 week:
1) It screws with my temperature, makes me feel hot and cold flashes. Whee.
2) It screws with my sleep schedule. The doc warned me that I could have “vivid dreams.” My reply was something like “how would I know the difference?” Truth is, I haven’t had especially vivid dreams. Instead, I have had a lot of tiredness and little sleep. Of course, that might be due to two kitties playing on me all night long for the last 2 nights….
3) It *may* be screwing with my digestive system, or I might have just gotten food poisoning at Friday’s catered lunch.
4) It works on the poison oak. Mostly. My legs still itch, but the rest of me is definitely healing.
About the only really scary thing that happened on it was Saturday night, when I took it later than usual cause I almost forgot, then woke up in the middle of the night, wondering if I’d taken it twice. Counted out the pills in the morning– I was fine.
Oh, I’ve had a sore throat since last Tuesday (yeah, the day I went to the doctor). So far, it hasn’t gotten worse (prednisone?), but it hasn’t gotten any better yet, either. Mint tea helped the most, so I think I will drink more of that today.
In other news this weekend: I made yarn! It’s a good way to procrastinate from packing. On Saturday I went to a geocaching workshop and met some of our local cachers. Alladin had his vet appointment Sat. morning– he weighs 8 lbs. now. Sunday was the D&D game. I worked on my CV this weekend, and on Friday I called one of my former professors to ask for a letter of recommendation, which I learned from Cabrillo I can send in with the packet and don’t need the prof to send separately.
I have been thinking a lot about what I want to do (work-wise), and how to make the next move. Cabrillo would be very good for me, I think, but I need also to keep my options open, and watch more carefully for the opportunities that would be best for me and John.
I have to write a 1-page essay on “what does diversity mean to me?” I can write about a lot of subjects relating to academia, but this one sucks. I *hate* the whole diversity discussion, which seems to me to be a very thinly veiled method of tokenism, when in fact, diversity is rampant in schools like Cabrillo, where everyone has a chance at affording a college education, and almost nonexistant in schools like Hampshire, where your financial aid gets screwed if you don’t have two affluent parents who are married to each other. Basically, economic availability=diversity. Anything else is just bullshit.
Now how to write that into a 1-page essay that will get me the job….

Packing sucks. But once you get all unpacked and settled (I’m still working on those, by the way) it’ll be worth it.

I used to take Pred for my asthma. Note the “used to.”
Careful with eating while you’re on it — it’s notorious for causing people to gain a lot of weight during short periods of time. Seen Jerry Lewis lately? Prednisone.

I’m off of it in 3 days or any time I decide I’ve had enough at this point– I’m only on it for 7-10 days anyway.

Prednisone can definitely give you a sore throat. I’ve taken it many times for asthma, and here’s what happens to me:
1. Sore throat
2. Weight gain, 5-10 lb.
3. Puffy face and hands
4. Crankiness (PMS-like)
5. Weird sleep cycles/insomnia
6. Achy joints
If it didn’t work so well on the asthma, I’d say screw it!

My friend says you can gain a lot of weight and that it made her VERY moody and the swings were amazing but it helped. I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well. I hope you feel better.

I’m probably going off of it tonight. I haven’t had any mood swings– long-term effects are unlikely when you’re only on it for a week. The main thing has been the temperature. Last night I woke up and my face was sweating.

Hi Steph! I tried to post but something happened. I hope all is well. Good luck with the job. Sorry that I haven’t been in touch. It has been a crazy few months for me with work and we moved again. It would be great to hear from you. I will check back on LJ to see how it goes with Cabrillo or whatever else you decide to go for. Best wishes! Di
