Dream
16-Feb-05
I dreamed my dad and step-mom were going to come visit me in my new house. My stepmom was annoyed at the TSA (which my dad works for), and was concerned about bringing her new baby (she has no baby, but in the dream, she did).
I dreamed about American Idol. I was a female contestant singing a duet with another male contestant. He forgot the lyrics when we got up there, and I got the judges to give us a second chance. I made him make eye contact with me, touch my hand while we sang, so he would stay focused on me, not the audience, and be able to perform.
So, here’s my take on American Idol. Terrified of having another Clay Aiken coming-out, the producers have basically said “eliminate any gay guys early.” If you watch the show carefully, there is a definite prejudice against gay men.
There’s also a bias towards whites. In the competition itself, there are more black contestants to start out (by an overwhelming majority– as John noted, Hispanics are still massively underrepresented). But last night, the judges neatly eliminated two rooms to bring the ratio closer to 50/50.
I loved the elimination of Room #3. It didn’t matter how well they sang. The Misfit room, filled with the remaining gay guys, fat women, and anyone whose fit in their mold wasn’t sexy (Constantine is sexy enough to not fit nicely) was eliminated, all in one room!
You have to get further on into the competition before anyone can really decide how ready these folks are for stardom, so I’m not backing any racehorses yet. I think Constantine will make it to the final 6 or so, but I don’t know how far that rocker sex appeal can really take him.
