January 2005: Book Reviews

Monday, January 31st, 2005

This is an archive of my shorter book reviews and notes, which historically have been posted over at the 50 Book Challenge on LiveJournal, but which I’m starting to move over here. I’m posting them with altered date-stamps, but they might show up in my LiveJournal cross-post anyway. Bear with me, please.

Note: Many of these books also have full reviews available in the book review podcast (RSS).

Geo-fun

Monday, January 31st, 2005

Went geocaching yesterday, but didn’t find the cache.

Went today to 3 caches and a letterbox. 1 cache was a park-and-grab on the way down Hwy 17. The other two were on a hike through the redwoods that normally takes about 45 minutes round trip, and took us over 2 hours (but we found the caches and a letterbox).

It was fun. I can’t say I was all that impressed by the letterbox stamp, which was a pre-made stamp of a fairy, but whatever. I sort of thought one was supposed to make one’s own stamp.

I need to take pictures of the mini-journals I made this weekend. They’re pretty.

’s Fifth Sunday party was today– much fun with people who should have just had nametags with their LJ usernames, since that’s how many of them know each other anyway. Well, those who don’t know each other “socially,” that is.

Also gamed with and and co this evening. We introduced a new player/player character and were still trying to find a way to say goodbye to the character whose player left earlier this year. It was…. amusing. Because I don’t just trust a character solely because there’s a body behind their voice. And yet… well, anyway, it was amusing. Oh, and my character wants very much not to like or trust him, but her instincts tell her he’s a good guy.

Teh Mighty Huntar!

John came home having killed eight skeet out of twenty five. About a third of the way through, he figured out in which direction his gun’s sight was off and proceeded to kill 1/2 of the remaining clay pigeons. Plus two paper targets. Apparently (I learned this Friday night), he was on a rifle team as a child. Surprise!

He shot a shotgun, a .45, and a rifle at the gun club.

John does like to exercise as many of his Bill of Rights as he can. No, we will not be getting a gun.

Saturday Kickaround

Saturday, January 29th, 2005

John and I looked at houses today. We’re…. just looking right now.

John just left for skeet shooting with some friends.

I’m going to bum around the house, do some cleaning and some arts and crafts, and probably go geocaching this afternoon. Game got put off until tomorrow, making tomorrow a busy day, but that’s OK.

I’ll try to remember to post pics of the arts and crafts I do when I’m finished. Pretty!

Mr. Cheney is Inappropriate

So, here’s what I’d like to know. Are we trying to send the message that our VP is too stupid to know what appropriate attire would be for a remembrance ceremony, or that he respects the dead so little that he can’t be arsed to change out of his hiking books and parka?

I’m guessing, based solely on the fact that he has staff to help him dress, that it’s the latter. So there you go: Auschwitz does not matter enough to the VP to actually wear appropriate attire.
