December 2004: Book Reviews

This is an archive of my shorter book reviews and notes, which historically have been posted over at the 50 Book Challenge on LiveJournal, but which I’m starting to move over here. I’m posting them with altered date-stamps, but they might show up in my LiveJournal cross-post anyway. Bear with me, please.

Note: Many of these books also have full reviews available in the book review podcast (RSS).

#51:

The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, Book 3), by Stephen King

Book III of the Dark Tower series. Lovely, rich, gorgeous– so glad I “read” (audiobook) it.

#52:

Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori, Book 1), by Lian Hearn

A fairytale with a Japanese-like culture of warrior classes and honor and suchlike.

#53:

Hominids (Neanderthal Parallax), by Robert J. Sawyer

I enjoyed reading this book, but on reflection realized that it was very dissatisfying; the story lacked a central conflict, and I ended up being quite frustrated after thinking about it critically.
