Weekend update
16-Aug-04
Friday night was date night and fondue party preparation. I think we watched a movie for date night, or tried to, but it was so awful, we just skipped it.
Saturday morning I got up early and drove to Los Gatos for the Dammit Run. I had thought this was a 5K easy run. Turns out it was 5 MILES and very steep, hot, rocky…. just the kind of thing you all will remember I bitched about 2 weeks ago. So I left. I didn’t run. I got the t-shirt, but I didn’t run the course. Instead, I went to Fleet Feet for new shoes (cue ominous music).
The salespeople at Fleet Feet are really inconsistent– they’re either really clueless or they know what they’re talking about. The ones who know what they’re doing are careful with your feet– they make sure the shoes fit, they check your size, but then ignore the measurements and go with what you’re telling them. The ones who don’t know what they’re doing push the one brand/model of shoes that they feel like pushing today, get fifteen different insoles (insoles do not fix a shoe that is too tight) to convince you that this shoe fits, and then switch you to a different shoe in hopes that it will fit, or at least it will feel so much more comfortable than that LAST one, you’ll buy it.
So, I bought a new pair of shoes.
I wore them yesterday for the 16 mile run. The shoes did not fit. I stopped at mile 13 and caught a ride back. I made it 13 miles, which is an achievement, but I’m seriously in trouble if I can’t resolve my shoe problems by next weekend.
I’m thinking about re-insoling my Brooks and just letting the blisters continue. At least they’re blisters I’m familiar with. The devil you know, and all that.
I finished listening to The Callahan Chronicals this weekend. What a great omnibus! What an amazing world! Made me all teary when it ended. *sniff* Actually, it made me teary-eyed every other story– a curious blend of funny funny funny SERIOUS. Perhaps it’s seriously funny?
Just did a little digging to find that there are four more Callahan’s books out (the Chronical ended in 1997). Ummm… birthday shopping, much?
I got flowers at work from John. They arrived at our receiving dock, because he ordered them from proflowers.com. They are pink roses. And it suddenly occurs to me that there’s no card, so I’m just assuming they’re from John.
Yesterday afternoon, I came home and slept. I can see this will be my post-marathon activity already. SLEEEP. Well, actually, I ate, showered, changed, then slept. Somewhere in there, I popped some painkillers to help my legs and feet. And I slept. When I got up, I decided to email cause he left his over-shirt at my house on Saturday. Right after I emailed him, I got a message from him mentioning that he’d left his shirt and could he pick it up…. long and short of it is, we had him over for a casual dinner in front of the TV last night (Mexican). It was really nice and fun and good to spend time with Rich; I don’t see him often enough as it is, and when I do, it’s in a group, so I don’t get to know him that well.
Today is my last day as a 20-something. I’m taking tomorrow off from work. I think I’ll buy a birthday bottle of good whiskey tonight to celebrate.
