Hammer’s leg

Not broken. Arthritic with tendonitis, apparently. We’re splinting anyway to provide support so he can still walk around on the other 3 legs and not lose more muscle mass. Right now, his leg muscles are so atrophied that he can’t really walk without all 4 feet functioning.

Molly suggested a different diet and Catherine suggested an additional feeding during the day, both of which I’m going to look into. Maybe a different diet wouldn’t smell quite so much and John would be able to feed him– a multi-purpose solution! ;)

If it’s not one thing….

Hammer was limping a couple of days ago and his leg swelled up. We iced it and last night we wrapped it. I gave him Deramaxx Tuesday night, Wednesday AM and Wednesday night. I am hesitant with the Deramaxx, because it caused bleeding after the surgery, but then there were so many complications from that surgery, and the Deramaxx was completely the wrong drug to give him, I decided to give it a try. Plus, it was the only anti-inflammatory drug I had for him. In the house, we have prednisone, Deramaxx, and two different sedatives that make him groggy and sleepy.

This morning he went to the vet, because there’s no sign of improvement. Dr. Miller’s assessment, before x-rays, is that it’s probably a metacarpal fracture. Splint for 6-8 weeks, which will be difficult for my boy to deal with (as well as for me!)

Also, Hammer hasn’t gained much weight since the surgery 2 months ago. He’s at 70.5 lbs. this morning. :( If anyone has suggestions for putting some more weight on him, I’m listening. His food regimen right now is:
AM: 1.5 cans of wet food (Iams beef & rice), 1 glucosamine tablet, and 1 PetTab.
PM: 1.5 cans of wet food (Iams beef & rice), 1 glucosamine tablet.

When I’ve been to the grocery recently and have it around, I add pumpkin (to prevent diarrhea), and yogurt, 1-2 tbsp of each.
