Blood donation, dinner, etc.
02-Jun-04
I donated blood yesterday, and gave an extra vial, this time to get a platelet count done for apheresis screening. Iron was really good, thanks to a spinach salad lunch and all the organic veggies we’ve been eating. I guess that means it’s time to remind everyone again– if you’re eligible to donate, you should really consider going in and trying to do so. Blood supplies are once again very low as we head into the summer season, when fewer people donate and there are more vaction car accidents. Late December-early January and June, July, and August are the critical times for blood supplies. I really wish that blood supplies didn’t reach critical levels 5 months out of the year.
Had another weird reaction, several hours after donation, where I started feeling kind of… floopy. I think I don’t drink enough water before donation– I’ll try uber-drinking before the next time to see if it helps. Certainly, drinking water when I felt that way helped a great deal.
When I got home, I made dinner. I sauteed two boneless/skinless chicken breasts in a white wine/olive oil/fresh organic garlic mixture, then set the chicken aside and emptied the pan of most of the oil. I then threw diced carrots and summer squash (organic) into the pan with some water to steam them up while I made 2 cups of brown rice with some crushed almonds mixed in for a nuttier flavor. When everything came out, I put it all in 2 bowls– rice, then veggies, then chicken, and served. I limited the spices to the white wine and the garlic, so we could really taste the flavors in the food, but John indicated a desire for more salt.
The blood donation meant no yoga, which means I haven’t worked out for 2 days now. Tonight is coach’s clinic at UCSC, with hill intervals. Eep! At least I did some hills this weekend, so I won’t be completely lost. Reminder to self: stop at home to pick up foradil before going to workout (foradil is the medication I take for my airways before working out– the inhaler is for crises).
Fish news: I just fed Zoot. First I pointed at him, which always makes him flare, then I droped the pellets in. He’s still displaying at me, jerking around the water and fluffing his tail out really big to let me know this is his food, and his space. Such a funny fish.
