Comments on <lj user=”news”> and teen pregnancy

The flap over today’s posts [here and the follow-up here] prompted me to comment to the posts, something I only occassionally do.

My comments boiled down to: Don’t post off-topic crap in . It has nothing to do with whether or not it’s a good cause or not. There are lots of good causes out there. It has to do with the fact that is the official mouthpiece of LiveJournal for keeping users informed about site changes. Volunteers are expected to read this journal. I am expected to read it. I don’t have the luxury of ignoring posts in .

Frankly, I don’t give a damn about the site posted by . I care that Jesse felt that was an appropriate place to promote a political/social agenda. I care that has been defending his action site-wide. I care that yet again there’s a disconnect between certain paid staff* and Brad and The Rest Of Us, and that the disconnect seem to go something like “staff+Brad do not care how volunteers feel about shit.” That’s all that I care about.

I want the volunteers to be considered and appreciated, and I don’t want to have highly respected volunteers being insulted in an official post in an official community. I don’t know why I think they wouldn’t be, since all past history has shown that Brad+staff have no problem with directly insulting unpaid volunteers in public and official forums. But that is what I want and what I expect (nay, demand) from any project I am going to participate in.

*minus who really takes care of us and does give a damn.
