John’s birthday

Saturday, January 31st, 2004

John’s birthday is officially on Monday, but since we both have to work, we’re celebrating it today.

So far, we’ve had cupcakes for breakfast, opened presents, run an errand, signed up for SCUBA classes, had Chinese food for lunch, and are now home geeking out– me on the computer, him on Civ3 (though earlier he was playing GTA:Vice City).

For birthday, I got him:
Our Traditional gift (something that I give him every year but don’t wish to share with others– personal)
The Introvert Advantage (he knew this was coming)
Simpsons: Road Rage (we both enjoyed it so much when we rented it from Blockbuster)
Basic SCUBA Certification class (with me as his buddy) - we start on Sunday, March 21, so I need to get a doctor’s sign-off before then (AAAA!)

January 2004: Book Reviews

Saturday, January 31st, 2004

This is an archive of my shorter book reviews and notes, which historically have been posted over at the 50 Book Challenge on LiveJournal, but which I’m starting to move over here. I’m posting them with altered date-stamps, but they might show up in my LiveJournal cross-post anyway. Bear with me, please.

Note: Many of these books also have full reviews available in the book review podcast (RSS).

Something funny

Friday, January 30th, 2004

I need to be entertained. I have a “Chuckle” category in my Memories. I want to add stuff to it.

So, a request for my wonderful friends: Please post (in comments below) one or two journal entries (can include comments, if they’re funnier than the entry), that you find absolutely side-splitting hysterical on LiveJournal. They can be yours or someone else’s; doesn’t matter, but I have to have permission to see it (so public, or I have to be on the user’s friends list). Something you found to be so funny, you saved it to your memories, or wanted to print it out. If you’re really stuck for ideas, post the funniest entry you’ve made in the last year.

Which reminds me…. there’s a post from that must be added to that memory category.

Errands, writing

Thursday, January 29th, 2004

I dropped off the speakers to be packed up today. Need to pick them up tomorrow. Whew.

Brought my laptop and novel printout to work today. I plan to do a little reading on the novel as I get the opportunity, and am going to Coffee Society tonight for the write-in. I wonder if re-reading my own novel counts for the ?

I also brought my cross-stitch project, because I realized that I didn’t work on it yesterday or the day before. I don’t know when I’ll have time to work on it today– maybe at CS while giving my brain a break.

John bemoaned his lack of tools today when I needed him to procure speaker wire to test the speakers this morning. I think maybe Sunday will be the day to do the “hardware” part of the garage.

Oh, and I wrote a little card yesterday to . I carefully sealed it with green sealing wax, addressed it, and stamped it with an Air Mail stamp.

This morning I realized that I was going to congratulate her on her new comms adminship, but I couldn’t remember which category she’d recently been made admin of, and I left the half-line blank, intending to look it up. Only, of course, I forgot to look it up and finish the line.

So there’s this blank half-line at the beginning of my signed-and-sealed card for . Should I open the card and finish the sentence, put a “PS” on the outside of the envelope, or send it as it is and hope she reads this journal entry and understands?

Dreams

Thursday, January 29th, 2004

I dreamed there was a chemical contamination at Nanometrics.

I dreamed that I met , , and at a science fiction convention in San Jose.

I can’t remember the third dream I had…. something about driving an 18-wheeler, and then sticking it in my backpack when I needed to walk somewhere.
