I think John is going to get a Titanium PowerBook.
We might be switching to an all-OSX household.
That would be schweet.

Just remember that the wireless range on a TiBook is so poor that if you sit in laptop on top of yor acess point you /might/ get a signal.
Well, not far off that.
The new PowerBooks all have better positioned antenna.

That’s what I meant– he’s going to get what I have (12″ Powerbook G4).
Actually, right now he’s going to get OS X, install it on the iMac (Graphite limited edition with CD-R/DVD player), and decide if he likes it enough to use it on a regular basis. Then he might get the Powerbook (we’re short on $$ after buying the solar panels for our house).

As long as that machine has enough memory…
You should let him play with Trinity enough that he’ll know it’ll be both prettier and faster than the iMac. Oh, and he’ll have 10.3 on his, if he buys a new one, which includes the ooh-aah feature that is Exposé. (Seriously, find a 10.3 machine and hit shift-F11, then go ‘oooh’. ;o) )
If he’s used to using Linux, he should find it acceptable, at least. There’s tweaks which will make it close to how he’s used to, plus he can install X11 on it and use most of the programs he’d be used to.
Good luck moving to Mac OS X. :o)

I’m buying Panther for our imac this week, using my educational discount, so he can try out 10.3 before getting the laptop.
He was shopping online for laptops and decided, since he can install gentoo linux on anything (and might do so on a mac, even), that he wanted to go for hardware.
And that the Mac laptops have the best hardware.
Go Apple!!!
Of course, this is the same conclusion I came to 5 months ago when I decided to buy Trinity.
