New phones
06-Oct-02
We bought the new phone system today– a Panasonic KX-TG2740-S, with 4 handsets (it’s an expandable system). The cool thing about this system is that you can just pick up the damn phone when you want to talk– no wacky “call transfer” required, though you can do that, too. Also, 3 mailboxes (I’m box 3), caller id and such, and of course remote voice mail.
I plugged everything in, set up the directory, registered all the phones to the base, and then tried to call my mom on the phone using the speakerphone.
No dial tone.
Yes, friends, the wall jack lacks a dial tone. It’s not connected, obviously, to our phone service. And, apparently, I will need to crawl underneath the house in order to connect it up. So, I guess I’ll be putting on blue jeans and a long-sleeved shirt today to indulge my claustrophobia a little. Whee. The other option is to move the phone base to a different part of the house, but I really like the idea of being able to see in one glance when I come through the front door that there’s a message waiting.
In the meantime, I guess I’ll take pictures of the phones we currently own for listing on eBay. We’ve got 2 phone/answering machines, a Siemans expandable system with 2 extra handsets, a 900 MHz 2-line phone (no caller id), 2 caller ID boxes, a sturdy tape (non-digital) answering machine, a call-active indicator light, and 2 “No sales calls, please” buttons for telling sales people not to call back. Oh, and a standard push-button corded telephone that I might just keep in case we need to make a call during a power outage.
