01. your live journal “user name” & what it means:
“mortaine” was the name of my character in a co-ed naked role-playing session, played in a hot tub.
No, I am not kidding.
02. on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) how well does your livejournal represent who you actually are?
Probably about an 8. I’m fatter in person.
03. how much about your life do you post to lj?
Quite a bit. I don’t really keep many secrets. I don’t post every detail of my life, like when I went to the bathroom and stuff like that, but I do post about things I did that day, and how I’m feeling, what I’m thinking about. I post when I’m upset about something, or when I’ve had a bad dream.
04. is there anything you refuse to post about?
If I refuse to post about it, why would I let people know here? Yes, there are things I don’t post about. In general, I don’t post about my sex life– that’s personal and between me, my husband, and our sex toys. I also try not to post about things that would be hurtful to people I care about, or if I do post about them, they’re private or friends-only posts. For example, if I post that my mom is driving me nuts (she’s not, by the way), then I will usually make it a friends-only entry because I need to vent, and I appreciate the support of my LJ friends, but my mom doesn’t need to hear/read me venting about her.
05. on a scale of 1-10 how interesting do you think your own journal is to others?
Oh, probably about a 6 or 7. Some people like to read my journal just to know how overloaded my schedule is.
06. from who/how did you find out about lj?
Susan (), a friend of mine who went into the Peace Corps last year.
07. has anyone ever joined lj because of you?
Yes. , , , and I’ve given out codes to others who haven’t used them yet.
08. what proportion of your posts are friends only?
Less than 5%
09. what is your favorite interest on lj?
Hmm. Tough one. I read a lot, but I don’t really connect with most of the folks there. The same is true in the RPG interests. is a terrific community, and the only one I’ve found that really tries to take “reading” to the more academic, high-end level.
10. Has anything on lj ever caused you to establish, rethink, or even change your belief or position on something?
Mmmm. I used to have more confidence in the young adults of this world, but I’ve changed my mind based on LJ.
11. how often do you respond / comment on other peoples journals?
Frequently. Daily.
12. do you prefer to write in your journal, read other journals?
I have almost 3 times as many comments posted in others’ journals as I have journal entries in my own. I prefer to comment in others, but I think I like it even more when people comment in mine and we start a conversation.
13. have you ever had something mean said to you or been stalked, harassed, or got into an argument/flame war on lj (or did it to someone else)?
Yes, I have had someone call me names because I tried (foolishly, I know) to be helpful to a teenager who posted to . Foolishly, I thought this person was, in fact, of the maturity level to be a grad school lit major, but she’s just a high school weenie, and her friend called me all sorts of names for rightly pointing out that dropping out of high school to become a freelance writer was not going to end in happiness.
14. have you ever banned someone from your journal?
Not yet.
15. who are your favorite lj friend(s) and why?
Hmmmm. I can’t answer that one, because each of my friends is different, and I like them for different reasons.
16. how many of your LJ friends have you actually met?
6, but of those only one of them had a LJ before I met him. The rest either got their LJs from me, or we were friends before and I found out they have journals.
17. of all of the people on lj you know of, who is the most like you?
is most like me. We took personality tests, and matched at something like 80 or 90%. He is also a RL friend of mine who I’ve known for 7 or 8 years now and who I love like a brother.
18. why are you most likely to add someone to your friends list?
They have at least one common interest in an interests search, or they post to a mutual friends’ journal, and I go to their journal page and their most recent entries have something intelligent to say– using correct (or mostly correct) grammar.
19. do you automatically add friends to your journal if they add you first?
No. But I am likely to add friends if they add me first.
20. what is the most likely reason you wouldn’t add someone to your friends list?
They can’t write a sentence without using l33t-speak.
21. is your “significant other” on lj?
No. He doesn’t write, doesn’t make comments, doesn’t try to dwell in the past. He remarked on Monday that if I didn’t collect mementos of our life and events, our house would be empty. This may have been a touching comment, or it may have been wishful thinking in terms of de-cluttering the house. We’re a good match, honest.
22. have you ever wanted to meet someone on lj?
Sure. In fact, owes me two pints, I’ve met in person, and the next time I’m up in Seattle, gets a visit. There are a few folks I do not want to meet in person, but I don’t generally put them on my friends list.
